Artist's Statement

My name is Dawn Weldon Ward, I am a self taught Artist from Ireland, currently living in Japan.

My nickname amongst friends has been between "Sunrise" and "Welward", as it's a mix of mine and my Husband's surnames. Inspiring my Artist name, Sunrise Welward.

Having spent my Childhood in South Africa, I developed a love of Tribal Art, predominantly the Zulu Tribe and the Colours of Africa. My Mother owned a Pottery Studio and was a big influence on me creatively.

Returning to Ireland in my teens, I dreamt of studying Art, but life just got in the way. After a few "beginners" jobs, I began working in a Display Shop in Cork City and quickly realised I had a talent for Window Dressing and Display Coordination. I thrived on the creative freedom it allowed me and I was able to express myself and my passion, through the decorative exhibition of my work. There began my career path.

After 10 years working in the trade, my Husband got a job opportunity in Berlin, Germany. This was such an exciting place to live, surrounded by incredible Graffiti/Street Art. I loved the gritty creativity and colour, it was hard not to be hugely inspired by the many talented Artists in Berlin! Having spent two years there, Berlin led to Japan.

I have decided to get back to basics and my original love of drawing and painting. As I have lived "on the road" for the past 3 years, my previous paintings and sketches are packed away in boxes at my Parents home. So what I have to show is what I've been working on since arriving in Japan.

"The works of 2013!"

Working in an abstract style and using an abundance of bright colour, I work in Acrylic, Watercolour, Ink and Pen. I draw and paint my own variations of B&W tribal stylised designs. I love to paint skulls, often using the Mexican Folk Art celebration - "Dia de los Muertos" as my inspiration - with my own Zulu/Graffiti twist. I am just so inpsired by colours and how emotional and expressive they are for me.

Many Artists inspire me, past and present, so many to put down. Let's just say, I'm inspired!

Pollock, Warhol, Klimt, Van Gogh, Dali, Degas, Morimura and so many talented street Graffiti Artists, to name but a few.

This is a form of self meditation and I'm exploring technique and having a lot of fun with it.
