Alexey Pronin's Artist Profile

I view art as a way to see and show beauty in the World. Most of the time we can't even rationalize why we are drawn to a particular art piece. It is this mysterious component that separates a simply nice creation from a masterpiece. I'm always hoping to come up with a picture that makes people pause and spend time looking at it. My choice of an art form is photography. It allows me to use different styles from photorealism to abstract. I like both black-and-white and color photography. Black-and-white photography provides more simplified yet symbolic view of the world. Color photography adds another dimension, and, sometimes, color itself can become the primary subject of a picture. Some of my photographs can be described as "hyper-realistic" - the colors might appear unnatural and overly saturated, yet in actuality they are quite accurate. The reason they feel "unnatural" is because I try to photograph rare and unusual events and subjects, which are quite different from what we see in everyday life. Sometimes, however, I do indeed enhance colors or use other techniques (e.g., a super-wide angle lens) to compensate for the absence of other sensory stimulation such as smell and sound, which normally contribute to overall experience. I hope that in the end my pictures resonate with the viewers and cause a response similar to what I had when the pictures were taken.

Alexey Pronin was born and raised in Moscow, Russia. He got his education at Moscow State University and earned a PhD degree in biochemistry. In 1991 Alexey moved to the USA. His job brought him from Saint Louis to Philadelphia to San Diego. He currently lives in Miami, Florida. For his first vacation in America Alexey bought a simple point-and-shoot camera to document his experience. That's when he discovered his love for photography. In a few months he traded the point-and-shoot camera for his first "real" camera (SLR) to get more control over the creative process. From the beginning Alexey showed affinity for bold use of color in his photographs. The first "official" recognition of his talent came in 1997 when his picture "Water lilies in red" was selected as one of the winners of the Popular Photography and Imaging Annual Contest and published in the January 1998 issue of the magazine. In 2005 Alexey switched from using film to digital photography. While still working as a scientist, Alexey dedicates much of his free time to fine art photography. His main subjects include nature, landscapes, cityscapes and abstracts. Alexey's pictures can be found in private collections around the world.
