Gayatri Manchanda's Artist Profile
Gayatri Manchanda
i like artist
I started painting in the early 90s, simple interpretations of Indian village folk. Living abroad there was a strong need to connect with India. With no formal training in Art - I have an M.A. degree in English Literature from Miranda House Delhi University - I credit a good education with an ability to critically assess my work and take it to different levels as I go along. It was not till another ten years of work that I felt I was developing a style of sorts and felt a little confident about my work. I am fascinated with dancers. Dance movements spin dancers and their audiences to another universe. I am not interested in 'spirituality' in the common sense. Gradually I felt with all the influences of living in foreign environments for thirty years of my life - I am the wife of an Indian diplomat - I began to feel the rural experience was mostly a concept to me. I have moved on to abstract paintings and was surprised to discover how difficult they can be to execute. After all in a figurative painting the focus is already there, in abstract art it has to be created from scratch. On the whole I was most inspired by art I viewed in Russia. It has been bold and innovative in styles for a long time. I have exhibited in Colombo, solos in Moscow, Sofia (Bulgaria), and Skopje ( Macedonia), the India International Center at least twice, at the Habitat Center foyer as well. I have also taken part in group shows in Delhi. I feel my work now is a composite of all my experiences of different places and people I have encountered and all the different art concepts I have been fortunate to have been exposed to.
