Mainline steam,first generation diesels were fimiliar to C.L.Smith as visits to open pit mining and ports of the Great Lakes. Raised in a railway family with close ties to coal and iron mining he witnessed America's heavy industries at work. Returning from military service he started painting while working in industry, studying the great industrial illustrators Walter Greene and William H.Foster. Conveying a drama of light and motion he developed his own style of images. working in oil, with the primary focus on railways, marine and aircraft.
