Artist's Statement

Carolyn Nelson was born in the city of Chicago, Ill, as daugher to an industrial engineer and a concert pianist. She was reared in the Palm Beach area of sourh Florida and began her studies in art at the age of eleven. She studied studio painting, and illustration for a period of sixteen years in four private art schools. Her academics also include Florida Atlantic University and Cerritos College. She immersed herself in fiber art studios and under the direction of a master weaver from the University of California, Berkley. She also studied fine art restoration, for a period of four years.

Her training in illustration, created a career of fifteen years as a techinical illustrator in the aerospace industry, designing both military and civilian aircraft.

A life path of colors of fragile threads in a personal tapestry creates her work and depth of emotion in hues that fire her passion and her art. She is drawn to nature, and native peoples with her work in northern Mexico while in research for developing a rural water system to go into Latin America. She worked for a period of nine years, a portion of each year with the Native American Nations of Apache and Pima, teaching canning techniques, simple mechanics, first aid and drawing to their children. She worked with the supertendent of rural schools in the state of Sonora, in northern Mexico, with resident teachers on how to survive in isolated villages and work with children who otherwise would not have access to schools.

Her work in Botswana was through LOVBOTSWANA outreach ministires, teaching weaving and art to orphaned children of HIV/AIDS.

While working in Mexico, she also restored several historical paintings at the Leo Sandoval Museum at the University of Sornora through the Alliance of the National Institute of Anthropology and History of Mexico. She is recognized in public areanas from the Frank Lloyd Wright Institute, to the Leo Sandoval Muesuem at the University of Sonora.

Her work as a art restorer has included the painting collection of Lucian Bernhard, the father of the American Poster.

October, 2000 she was one of ten Americans to show in the EuroArtExpo, Barcelona, Spain. That same year, she also started teaching through a grant from the Natiional Endowment of the Arts, through Palm Beach County School District, and the Juvenile Justice System, art to children at risk.

2001-2003, She had three interns from the country of Japan, to study under her direction through the United States State Department Internship Program. The Interns acquired training in visual arts to support their individual art careers.

She also taught the childrens workshops at the Edna Hibel Museum in Jupiter, Florida during the summer months.

2005 She worked in Maun, Botswana in southern Africa. The work there was teaching orphaned children of HIV/AIDS a 8,000 year old weaving system so that later in life, they would have a craft that they could build upon.

2006 She studied and became a master Mneme Therapist for the cognitive impaired and special populations with brain injuries. she also became a art specialist for the Urban Renewal programs through Florida Atlantic University for children at risk.

She is the National Expansiion Leader for Paint Dancing.Com. The project supports food banks, and charities throughout the United States and now Internationally. That's right..painting and dancing at the same time.

She is a Goodwill Ambassador for Humanthes and Chairman for HIS EYE IS ON THE SPARROW Visual and Performing Arts Tour with the focus on orphange relief efforts in developing and third world countries.

Her art in Public places includes a mural that is on tour through PROJECT HOPE (affiliated with FEMA) as awareness in support relief, for the recent hurricane disasters that struck the southeastern part of the United States.

Today her work comes from her deep love and connection with people. The emotions and experiences of being among them and blend the foundations of earlier fundamental European impressionism that forms the real tapestry.

She wants to convey the depth and beautfy of their lives that also invigorates her spirit, influences her work and edifies them.

Personal Information

She resides in south Florida, and has one daughter, Katrina and three grandchildren. Her late son, Matthew is a fallen hero of the Gulf War.








Personal Interests

Dancing, singing, swimming, coordinating Paint Dancing events, painting, and time with family as well as outreach ministry programs.
