My approach to art – painting in this case – is very much the same as William Wordsworth’s, the great English romantic poet. His main concern was to give dignity to ordinary objects and people, by transforming them through imagination and colouring. The language to be used, in his advice, was the language “really used by men”, so that everyone would be able to understand, feel and share the emotion. Forms and colours, which are an even more immediate language than poetry, just carry the same ‘task’ to me: like ‘epiphany’ in literature, they should convey emotions and feelings to the viewer, who had never imagined that the ‘ordinary’ could be just as amazing as the ‘extraordinary’. And sometimes even more. “What distinguishes original minds is not being the first to see something new, but seeing as new what is old and already well known, seen and neglected by everyone.” (F. Nietzsche).
