Realism-RepresentationalMainline steam,first generation diesels were fimiliar to C.L.Smith as visits to open pit mining and ports of the Great Lakes. Raised in a railway family with close ties to coal and iron mining he witnessed America's heavy industries at work. Returning from military service he started painting while working in industry, studying the great industrial illustrators Walter Greene and William H.Foster. Conveying a drama of light and motion he developed his own style of images. working in oil, with the primary focus on railways, marine and aircraft. Numerous one man shows to include The Union League Club of Chicago 2009. His paintings have appeared in the publications of Vintage Rails, Narrow Gauge Gazette, Interurban Press, the A & E DVD "When Giants Roamed",and TRAINS Pub.
